The International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the leading United Nations agency for Information and Communication Technology, is marking its 146th anniversary of establishment on 17 May this year by recognizing eminent personalities who have made a significant contribution in using ICT for social development to unleash the digital revolution. In this regard, ITU has decided to confer the 2011 ITU World Telecommunication and Information Society Award to Mr. Sam Pitroda, Adviser to the Prime Minister of India on Public Information Infrastructure and Innovations, in recognition of his dedication to promoting ICTs as a means of providing a better life for humanity and social and economic empowerment.

Ministries Need to Focus on Sectoral Innovation Council- National Innovation Council
The National Innovation Council has proposed setting up of Sectoral Innovation Council by the Central Ministries for preparing a roadmap for a decade of innovations in the respective sectors. The aim is to facilitate the creation of multiple Sectoral Innovation Councils aligned to Central Government Ministries to drive competitive advantage in the identified sector. To take this initiative forward, a meeting was held with the Secretaries of Government of India where an introduction about the concept and framework of the proposed Sectoral Innovation Councils was given by Mr Sam Pitroda, Adviser to the PM, PIII. Discussions also centred on operationalising this vision through a framework for implementation.

National Innovation Council to Involve States and Central Ministries in Popularising Innovation
The National Innovation Council (NInC) has asked all State Governments to set up State Innovation Councils to drive innovations in their respective states. There has been a positive response from several State Governments regarding the setting up of these Councils. NInC has also written to central Government Ministries to set up autonomous Sectoral Innovation Councils, aligned to Ministries, to drive innovations and competitive advantage in multiple sectors. These Councils would aim to co-opt domain experts and other stakeholders to prepare a Roadmap for Innovations for the next decade for identified sectors.
